Writing is an art that evolves with time and practice. When I started my writing journey a few years ago, I received valuable advice to stick to simple terms like “said,” “asked,” and “replied.” These basic elements provided a solid foundation for my storytelling. However, everything changed when a friend, who had been reading my books, suggested exploring a more descriptive style. This feedback sparked a curiosity within me, leading me to venture into the world of descriptive writing. The path I tread has been exhilarating, and I believe it lies somewhere between simplicity and vividness. In this blog post, I want to share my experience of discovering my writing style and how it has impacted my creative process.
The moment my friend hinted at exploring descriptive writing, I felt both excitement and uncertainty. The idea of painting more vivid pictures with my words was alluring, but I was apprehensive about deviating from the simplicity I had grown comfortable with. Nevertheless, I decided to take the plunge and make my next two books more descriptive.
At first, it was a challenge. Finding the right balance between descriptive language and not overwhelming the reader was like walking on a tightrope. I had to be cautious not to use flowery language for the sake of it but to employ descriptions that added depth to the story and enhanced the reader’s experience. Gradually, as I practiced, I began to find my footing, and my writing began to flourish.
As I explored the realms of descriptive writing, I realized that my true writing style lay somewhere in between simplicity and vividness. I found that my narrative was most compelling when I combined straightforward dialogue with vivid descriptions, enabling readers to immerse themselves fully in the story’s world. It was a revelation that allowed me to celebrate both aspects of my writing, creating a unique blend that resonated with my voice.
The pursuit of discovering my writing style has been nothing short of amazing. Every step of the way, I unearthed new facets of my creativity and honed my skills as a wordsmith. I learned that writing is a journey of constant exploration and evolution. Embracing change and being open to trying different styles is crucial for personal growth as a writer.
My newfound style has had a profound impact on how readers engage with my work. Descriptive writing has allowed me to forge deeper connections with my audience, as they get a more profound insight into the world I create. Many have expressed how they feel transported into the pages of my books, experiencing every emotion and detail alongside the characters.
Before concluding this blog post, I want to express my excitement about my new publishing platform, Draft2Digital. They have been instrumental in bringing my work to a broader audience and have been a joy to work with. Their support and user-friendly interface have made the publishing process smoother, allowing me to focus more on writing and connecting with readers. However, I am still looking for more publishers.
In this journey of self-discovery, I have learned that writing is not about adhering to strict guidelines but about expressing oneself authentically. By exploring descriptive writing, I have found a balance that reflects my unique voice while captivating my readers. My advice to fellow writers is to fearlessly explore different styles, for it is through experimentation that we grow as artists. So, if you have read any of my books, I hope you enjoyed the experience and got lost in the worlds I crafted. And for those who are yet to embark on this adventure, I welcome you to join me on this thrilling ride. I do have a page from each book in the reading room, Happy reading!
